Star Sky 2 is the direct sequel of Star Sky, a rather different gaming experience we reviewed a while ago. We weren’t convinced of the original back in the days but this sequel improves on the formula. Is Star Sky 2 worth getting? Time to find out!
The concept
I’m not going to discuss the concept of Star Sky 2 since it’s explained in our review of the original game. One thing you do need to keep in mind before you purchase the game is that this isn’t your regular experience. Star Sky isn’t about scoring high scores or defeating enemies, it’s about walking around in a magical environment. The graphics are simplistic but in combination with the great music, Star Sky does succeed in creating a certain atmosphere. That’s the real goal of the game, finding joy and even relaxation in the world, just by walking around in it and finding the secrets the world has to offer.
Different paths
In Star Sky, we followed the life of one person, in the sequel; we follow the life of two. By deciding if you want to go left or right, you control the male or female character. Both experience the environment in their own way and find out secrets that the other can’t see. Compared to the original, we were surprised to see that the world got a lot bigger thanks to this concept, making decisions also leads to new paths, leading you to new locations. Since you open up different paths by activating a certain event in the environment, you’ll unlock new events. This results in a higher replay value, there’s always something new to see during one of your walks, until you discovered it all of course.
Time to relax
The thing about Star Sky 2 is that it’s one of those games that you’ll hate or love. I started to understand and appreciate the formula a little more during this sequel but that doesn’t take away the fact that some won’t find pleasure in it. The game is meant to be played slowly, rushing the experience will result in lost events. It’s crucial to listen to the music while walking, when you hear a slight difference in tone, you’ll simply need to stop walking and see for yourself what will happen.
The developer added visual hints this time to know what you can expect if you stop walking at a certain location. It takes away some of the magic in my option so it’s good that these hints are completely optional. We’re sure some gamers will be glad to get small visual hints since finding the secrets without them can be tricky.
| The Good: | The Bad: |
| + Bigger world | – Still rather short |
| + Two playable characters | – Too slow for some |
| + Different paths |
Star Sky 2 improved the concept of the original by creating a bigger world and more paths and secrets to discover. That doesn’t take away the fact however that it’s a rather unconventional game. There’s no real goal to achieve besides finding all secrets hidden in the environment. If you’re looking for a game that takes things slower, this is worth a shot for sure!
