Ever since Yoshi first appeared in Super Mario World he has been one of the most loved Nintendo character who helped Mario during his adventures to save Princes Peach. But in Yoshi’s Story, he goes on his own adventure with one goal: eat as much fruit as he can.
Yoshi’s Story is a funny platform game the was originally released on the N64 but is available on the Wii U’ Virtual Console. The goal of the game is to collect 30 pieces of fruit during every level. These can be found in abundance throughout every course, lying around, floating in bubbles, and even carried by some enemies. According to the Yoshi you play you have a favorite fruit and every day there is a new lucky food that gives you more points when you eat it. It’s up to the player to decide if he eats every piece of fruit that he comes across with or go for lucky fruit and your favorite food to improve your score considerably.
In order to collect the fruit the Yoshis can walk, run, jump, swim, crouch, push boxes, stomp enemies, collect items with their tongue, lay eggs by swallowing edible enemies, throw eggs, pound the ground, sniff, and perform flutter jumps to get you way thru the levels. This game uses mechanics from other classic Nintendo games but adds new features that give this games his own Yoshi feeling to it.
In Story mode, you return to the Super Happy Tree that was stolen by Baby Bowser. On their way to Baby Bowser’s castle, the Yoshis must progress through the six pages of the storybook, encountering six different areas of the island to get the Super Happy Tree back. After you completed the Story mode you can replay all levels in Trail mode.
It is very refreshing to play a platform game where your goal is to collect fruits other than getting to the end of the stage. I was not impressed with the first level but a few levels later I was so hooked. This Game is so much fun and feels different than most platform games. Yoshi’s Story is a perfect game when you want to play something else and just want to relax.
