Review: Just Dance 2017 (Switch)

The long awaited Nintendo Switch finally arrived and you are so happy with it that ever since you got it, all your spare time went to playing  Zelda Breath of the Wild and exploring all the new features of your brand new console. Everything is fine and you are really enjoying the Nintendo Switch, but there is just one problem…  your significant other is not that happy with you playing more on your Switch than spending quality time with her/him and an unpleased girl (or boy) can be very dangerous. Fortunately for you, I have the perfect solution: Just Dance 2017.

Just Dance is what the name suggests, a dancing game that makes use of the Joy-Cons to track your dance moves to see how good or bad of a dancer you really are. Most guys will probably role with their eyes just by hearing it but if I’m really honest it’s surprisingly fun. There are a lot of game modes but it always comes down to you dancing in front of your TV with a remote in your hand. It takes some time to get used to following the dance moves but once you get the hang of them you will be shaking your ass off in the living room.

Just Dance isn’t really just dancing but also making your moves at the right time or having a long perfect streak to get you higher points. This made the game feel very arcadey and awoke the competitor in me. You can dance on your own but I recommend playing this game together. You can choose to dance to beat each other or to dance together if you don’t want to take the risks of losing to your girlfriend (even if it’s losing to a dancing game it still hurts). One thing I really liked was the option to use your smartphone as an extra controller so you are not limited to only the Joy-Cons.

All these features and fun that comes with them turns Just Dance 2017 into a great party game, where the Switch is the perfect platform for. Just Dance is out on most platforms these days but there is not a single console you can take with you this easy and start dancing into the night. Most people will be a little too shy at first but once the party starts, even those people will be hard to stop.

The songs you dance on are quite versatile, from Mayor Lazer to Queen and back to O-zones’s Dragostea Din Tei (numa numa yay) and many more dances and genres to choose from. Each dance felt totally different and I bet there is something for everybody in Just Dance.

The game’s basics are dancing but when you are tired of just dancing (pun intended) there are many different game modes to choose from. There is a work-out feature which lets you dance on the standard tracks but with a more intensive choreography for you to burn more calories than usual but believe me the normal choreography is still quite spicy.

When you really want to try something new there is a game mode called Alien Dance machine. In this mode, you have to make crazy moves on even crazier songs to fuel an alien dance engine to help them get back to their planet. Most of the moves are hilarious and offer a great alternative to take a break from the “normal” dances.

Graphics are a very important aspect of games these days, and surprisingly Just Dance had very cool and unique graphics which quite surprised me, to be honest. Every song has a recreated version of the music video in the typical Just Dance style. The visuals combined with the music while you’re performing the perfect dance makes you feel like you are in the music video and enables you to dance like the star you really are.

Verdict:

I hate to admit it, but I actually liked Just Dance 2017. It’s what it is, a dancing game but a really fun one with amazing visuals. The Nintendo Switch is the perfect platform for this game. A great game to play together with friends or with your girl/boyfriend. I liked it for a while but I don’t think I’m going to play this game that much. My girlfriend however, loved this game. Which made her very happy and made her like the Switch more, which made her less jealous when I play Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild all night.
