Pause for thought: Gamescom 2015 – The year of Xbox One?
August 1, 2015 \ Uncategorized \ 0 Comments
With Gamescom 2015 just around the corner, it’s time to look forward to Europe’s biggest convention and get hyped about everything we’ll see. Since E3 was pushed back a week and Gamescom is held a week earlier, there isn’t that much time between the two big shows. This means we won’t see that much new stuff, or will we? If we take a look at Microsoft, things sure are looking interesting.
The big shadow of E3 2015
Gamescom is definitely heading towards a rather odd year thanks to the big shadow of E3 2015. Both conferences are scheduled right after each other and most developers decided to show their stuff during E3 2015. While Gamescom has always been bigger in numbers, E3 still remained the most important convention of the year. Maybe it’s because it’s only accessible for members of the industry or maybe it has something to do with it being held in America. Needless to say, this affects the line-up of games for Gamescom 2015. As it is now, it really looks like it will be the perfect show for Xbox One. Let’s take a closer look at the facts.
The absence of Sony
First of all, let’s start this article by pointing out the strange absence of Sony. The company isn’t holding a press conference and behind closed door sessions aren’t organized neither. The reason for this is simple; Sony thinks there isn’t really something new to share since E3 2015. The first big European convention where Sony will be back is during the ‘Paris Games Week’ in October. The absence of Sony is troublesome for many, especially the press. We won’t see new stuff but visitors will still be able to play the Sony games that were playable on the E3 booth. It’s good for the European players that they’ll most likely get their hands on games as Tearaway, the Nathan Drake Collection and more… When it comes to press, it’s simply odd that Sony isn’t sharing anything new.
Nintendo is showing more of the same
This brings us to the other big player in the industry, Nintendo. The company is also coming to the convention but brings us more of the same. The biggest part of their line-up is a copy of what was demonstrated during E3 2015. Meaning you’ll be able to play Super Mario Maker, Chibi-Robo, Star Fox and other big upcoming games. So are they showing anything new and exciting? Well there are a few things worth mentioning:
Little Battlers eXperience: This game wasn’t featured during the E3 and will be playable for the first time during Gamescom. It follows the story of a group of scholars that tries to take down an evil organisation in a world where robot battles are the real deal. It sounds like an interesting game thanks to the real-time animations and battles but it really isn’t that mind-blowing, it’s fun to have and it’s great that it’s playable nevertheless.
Nindie games: Nintendo will put a lot of effort in promoting upcoming Indie games during this year’s Gamescom. Typoman, Shovelknight and Mighty No. 9 are just some examples. Gamers will be able to play other upcoming Nintendo games as well.
Aside of those games, Nintendo is also organising activities for Pokémon, Mario Kart and Smash. Also not that Charles Martinet will be present during the show. All in all, Nintendo will offer a lot of fun that we’ve already seen at other locations.
Microsoft brings in the big games
This brings us to Microsoft, the only company of the big three that brings some of the big guns to Gamescom. Microsoft is the only company of the big three that held some of its games from E3, saving room for surprises for European gamers. The company is showing three new and important games for the first time since E3 2014:
Scalebound: This is without a doubt the most anticipated game of the Gamescom show. We don’t know a lot of it just yet but the teaser we’ve seen during E3 2014 got us excited from the start. An action game filed with dragons under the PlatinumGames label is reason enough to be excited but also note that Hideki Kamiya is the director of the game. It’s the same man that brought us Okami and Resident Evil 2, we expect a lot!
Crackdown 3: Another game that went missing since E3 2014 is Crackdown 3 and this open-world action game is also returning during Gamescom! Again, nothing is really known of it just yet but we have a feeling this will be one of the best open-world action games that are coming our way the coming months. It’s also said that Crackdown 3 will be one of the first games to truly use the Cloud of Xbox One.
Quantum Break: Quantum Break, the third and last game that was held back for Gamescom will finally make its return. From the creators of Alan Wake, this mind-blowing and time-changing game promises to offer new ways of playing. It’s also said it will launch with a television show but those plans aren’t that sure anymore. We’re very curious to see what this game has become in its years of absence.
Aside of the big three, Microsoft will also show us more of Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War Ultimate and the timed-exclusive Rise of the Tomb Raider. It’s no surprise if we tell you that Microsoft will most likely have the best line-up of Gamescom with everything we know now.
What about the other companies?
Of course it’s foolish to just see what the so-called big three has to offer, what about other companies? Well we know that both Ubisoft and EA are bringing in a line-up similar to E3. This means that gamers will be able to see Syndicate, Mirror’s Edge 2, the Division and more in Germany as well.
The same can be said for Square Enix that will also show the games it already showed during E3 including Just Cause 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider. So as far as third parties go, it’s safe to say that they’ll won’t show that much new stuff.
We do know on the other hand that Mafia III will have its premiere during Gamescom and perhaps some other companies will be sharing other new things as well.
To conclude, virtual reality will be a big deal during the show with multiple hardware on showcase. It’s more than just Oculus now that Valve and HTC are working on their own headsets and what about Sony? It’s clear, virtual reality will be big!
Conclusion, we’re ready to be surprised
We can only conclude that a lot of the dust has been settled after E3 2015 and that a lot of the big surprises were already revealed in LA. This doesn’t mean there isn’t something to see during Gamescom. Especially Microsoft will show us a lot of new stuff but now that we know that Mafia III will also make an appearance; we’re hopeful that more surprises will be revealed in Germany. Count us excited since we simply can’t wait to pack our bags and travel to Gamescom! Just a few more days to go!
