Review: New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii U)

Back in 2006, Nintendo launched the first ‘New Super Mario Bros.’ on the Nintendo DS. In 2009, the company released the follow-up game ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ on the Nintendo Wii. Now, the original Wii game is available on Wii U for download but is it worth your time? Time to find out.

The classic Mario formula

New Super Mario Bros. Wii was created to feel and play like the first Super Mario games a lot of gamers grew up with. This also means that the story isn’t that unique. It starts in Peach’ castle where the crew is celebrating a birthday. Everything seems just fine until Bowser Jr. jumps out of the cake and kidnaps Princess Peach; yes it’s that time of the year again…

To innovate the story a little, Bowser Jr. is accompanied by the other Koopalings. You’ll need to take them out in the different worlds before you reach Peach. Besides this, Mario isn’t on his own in this adventure. His brother Luigi and a yellow and blue Toad decide to help the famous Italian in his new adventure.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii was playable with up to four players and that’s not changed in this Wii U download. You can still play the game with four players or play it on your own. The amount of playable character doesn’t affect the story at all but a helping hand is rather useful, especially in the later levels of the game.

Well-balanced difficulty

New Super Mario Bros. Wii didn’t only bring back a classic story; it also brought back the right level of difficulty. A lot of Super Mario games that released before this one were too easy. Fans complained about this a lot and Nintendo listened. New Super Mario Bros. Wii starts off easy but to more you advance, the harder it all gets. If you want to complete the game on your own, you’ll need eight to ten hours to complete the story. Of course, there’s far more than just the story.

Classic Super Mario fun

The game is packed with extra challenges such as the Star Coins in each level. Each level has three hidden Star Coins, finding all of them is the true challenge. Nintendo concealed those coins in places you’ll never look during your first run. If you want to collect them all, you’ll really need to discover every little secret a level has. Collecting these coins isn’t something every player will enjoy but the hardcore Super Mario fans will certainly accept the challenge.

Besides the hidden coins, Nintendo also included multiple paths to reach your destination. Some of these will even lead you to new and hidden worlds so be sure to keep an eye out for hidden paths! It’s great to see Nintendo included this amount of extra challenges on top of the higher level of difficulty. It’s not Super Mario Maker hard but for a traditional Super Mario game, it sure does offer a lot of challenges.

If you’re new to Super Mario games you don’t need to fear that much. If you die more than eight times, you can activate a special Luigi block. If you activate this, a computer controller Luigi will play the level until you push a button and jump into the game again. This tool can be switched off of course but it’s great for the new and younger players.

New items

Every new Super Mario game comes with some new items, this isn’t different in the Wii version. If you played more recent Super Mario games you might recognize some of them but it’s worth mentioning they were released in this game first, let’s take a look:

– Propeller Mushroom: Allows Mario or another playable character to fly and hover to reach higher platforms. It’s a great new item to travel big distances or dodge enemies. Needless to say, you’ll need this item to unlock or find a lot of hidden rooms in the game.
– Penguin Suit: The Penguin Suit on the other hand transforms Mario in a cute little penguin. As a penguin, Mario (or others) is able to fire ice and swim a lot faster.
– Ice Flower: Don’t want to be a penguin but still want to fire ice? The Ice Flower is the answer! This item has the same effect as a Fire Flower but instead of fire, you’ll fire ice this time.
– Mini Mushroom: This little Mushroom was found in the Nintendo DS version but makes a return in New Super Mario Bros. on Wii as well. It allows the player to shrink down to a really small character to find new hidden rooms or dodge enemies.

Of course, these aren’t the only items in the game, as in the other Super Mario games, this one is filled with other classic Super Mario items and even the Yoshi Egg makes a return. With this Egg, you can call in the help of the loyal Yoshi to help you in a specific level. The only downside is that you can’t take Yoshi with you once you reach the end of the level.

Multiplayer madness:

Just like the original release, you can play this game with up to four players. The other players can help you reach the end of a level. As long as one of the players stays alive, you’re free to continue. If another player dies, it will return to the game in a small bubble. The multiplayer offers new ways to survive but of course it’s also possible to sabotage the other players. The multiplayer is most fun if you start getting the other players into trouble. Pick them up; throw them in lava for example. Just like in New Super Mario Bros. U, the multiplayer offers a lot of crazy fun.

The Wii U port:

So this Wii U port offers just the same amount of fun and the same game. In fact, it’s just a solution for those who haven’t bought the original Wii game but want to download it on their Wii U system. The only new feature is the possibility to play it on your GamePad only. This means you can play the game on the smaller screen as well. It must be said; playing it on a smaller screen makes it look even better. The game is filled with details and offers a great visual style; playing it on the GamePad even makes it better. Besides this, you can simply just buy the Wii disc and play it on your Wii U as well; it has nothing really ‘new’ to offer.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii offers a lot of fun and great content for Super Mario fans. It has the right difficulty and has some fun new worlds and items to mess around with. If you missed the original game and own a Wii U, it’s certainly worth downloading. If you already own the game, there’s no need to download it, it doesn’t offer anything new. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the perfect game for a fun evening with friends or to have some classic Super Mario fun on your own.

Got interested in games since I could read. Started with Nintendo but evolved into an all-round gamer. I love all kind of games; triple A games to Indie. If the vibe is right, I'll enjoy playing it.
