Review: Sushi Striker: Way of the Sushido

I already gave a sneak preview a little while ago, but now, this is my full blown review!

Sushi Striker Way of the Sushido caught me off guard to say the least. When I went into it, I was quite frankly not expecting a great challenge, but I must admit, I was very wrong. Sushi Striker brings a very strong anime-styled game to the table and let me tell you why this is this months’ must buy-game!

First, let us start with the story, like any game, classic good versus evil. You take on the role of Musashi, a young hero with an above average appetite! After a series of events, the world has become devoid of sushi for everyone. It is up to you to make sushi freely available to all.

Unearth the mystery behind Musashi’s missing parents and the infamous Sushi Struggles, and defend your homeland from the invading Empire so that everybody can enjoy sushi in peace once again. Be wary though, young warrior, for there are plenty of superior sushi samurai on the horizon. You’ll need to be at your tip-top best – as well as possess a hunger for success – to reign sushi supreme!

In true anime style, you face off against a variety of enemies, young and old, even some pretending to be friends! The animations in between the games are quite great, though oriented mostly at a younger public, I would still watch the anime if Nintendo ever made it. After playing this game, it is clear there is a possibility that it can happen. It just screams anime.

The game itself is also very good. I love how they slowly increased the difficulty level and the amount of new game mechanics every few levels. At first, you are just taught the basics, link the plates together so you can eat the sushi and throw the empty plates towards your enemy. You will learn about the Sushi Sprites and how they can help you fire off special attacks.

Using those special attacks to your advantage to get through a harder fight. I found it the best to use them together, it usually has the best impact.

Another special thing about the game, it is quite fast paced and if you mess up a level,  you can skip the formalities and go straight back into the action. This is a little feature that is often overlooked.

Like any game in the greater Nintendo family, Sushi striker is a well-polished game and it just feels like a great addition to any collection. I loved every bit of it and I must admit, it surpassed my expectations greatly. I specifically played the Nintendo Switch version for this review, but it should be noticed that also 3DS is getting this gem. I am actually buying it for my godson on 3DS so he can enjoy this game too.

Much like me, he also loves these fast-paced puzzle games with a good story. I can only imagine he will love it as much as me.

I haven’t even talked about the very best part of this game. There is a free demo out there. Anyone still on the fence about whether or not buying this game, can just download a free demo on his Nintendo Switch and try it out. I always love it when companies make demos available to us gamers. It just allows us all to really get a feeling for a game and not have to rely on a review, like mine right now. I fully well realize my review is just my personal opinion and I quite frankly love this game.

It has been a while since a game captured my attention like this. I keep switching from One piece Pirate Warriors to Sushi Striker and back. If you’d know me personally, you know how valid my love for both games is. One piece is my primary hobby, even more devoted to it than to games. But Sushi Striker is a game that does grab my attention and keeps pulling me back in. That is where its strength lies. You lose a battle, you pick up the game after a little break and head straight back into it.

It just draws you back in every single time.

In conclusion, this may be the unexpected hit on Nintendo Switch for the month. I am convinced that for many, it will be a game that exceeds their expectations. It’s been a while since I really could just say, I play this game because it is just pure enjoyment.

My rating for this game, this gem, this sleeper hit, it stands at a whopping 95% !
