Devil May Cry 3 is actually a PS2 era game and it came out back in 2005. It is a classic game with all the needed fanfare of back when and its nostalgia together with a 20 euros price point are its main appeals. I remember back in the days that DMC3 was actually one of the best looking games around and this version still has those exact same graphics.
As this is a port and not a remaster, this is to be expected and Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition comes with all its issues from the olden days. The outdated camera views, the blurry graphics and so much more. But in all fairness, I did not give a peep. Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition is a great example of a game that may not have aged well visually, the action however…
DMC3 is an action game where you are the big guy that fights off evil. As the chapters progress, slowly but surely you get more and more ways to fight. The fighting is considered very elegant and I must say this part specifically held up rather well. It is clear why this game series is still relevant today, many years after its original release.
While it is very action loaded, this entire game gets quite hard near the end and thankfully they did include an easy mode if you fail once too often. I always love when they do this and I wish every game would have this if possible. Even casual players will be able to really enjoy this game.
Now the elephant in the room, is the game worth its money? I can answer that and say that I think it is. I honestly think this game used to be great on PS2 and I can look past the blurry graphics and still appreciate the game. Despite all my grievances with the cameras, the graphics, … A great game will always remain a great game.
However… If you are expecting a crisp experience and graphics, a near-perfect gameplay, …. You may want to go to good ol’ Youtube and check out several gameplay videos and really see for yourselves. Not everyone may be tempted to pull the trigger on this one. Several of my friends actually preordered it and I hope they will enjoy it as much as I just did.
In conclusion, Devil May Cry 3 used to be a trendsetter and it set the bar for many games to come. While I do not follow its very high Metacritic score, I am still giving it a nice 8.
