Review: Zombie Army Trilogy (Nintendo Switch)

Welcome to our review of Zombie Army Trilogy on Switch, is a game like this made for handheld or TV mode?

The cult horror shooter comes to Nintendo Switch with three exhilarating campaigns, a heart-pumping horde mode, and intense horror action.
Zombie Army Trilogy is a pulse-pounding third-person shooter with three epic campaigns, a heart-pumping horde mode, and intense horror action.

In the dying flames of World War II, a legion of undead super soldiers threaten to overwhelm the whole of Europe. Fight alone or team up to save humanity from the zombie menace!

Battle through three epic campaigns across 15 demon-infested missions. Play solo or fight back to back in online or local wireless co-op for 2-4 players. Dare you take on the challenge?

I could say another day, another port of a great game on Nintendo Switch. It actually runs a little deeper for me personally as I am a big fan of Rebellion, the studio behind the Sniper games as well as Zombie Army. Released 5 years after the original, this one lands on Nintendo Switch and I welcomed it with open arms.

Having played the fourth game first, on Xbox One to be precise, this brings a rather unique point of view to this review. I have started with the upgraded mechanics of being able to upgrade your weapons and so on. In the trilogy, there are no such options. You pick out your loadout at the beginning and that is it. You want to be able to carry only 1 pack of dynamite? There you go!

While this lack of choice may be less comfortable in actual play, no heavy-hitting bullets able to take out many enemies at once for example, but it all comes down much more to skill. Shooting a zombie in the head, especially when the horde comes right at you, it becomes a way to stay alive, rather than get overrun.

At first, Zombie Army games are always a little overwhelming and this trilogy is no exception. I had this happen to me with the fourth game and now once again. Getting used to the controls and the pace, not forgetting some of the jump scares that are incorporated, this is quite the challenge. Also a must mention, I played it mostly on TV and without surround sound, this game was often a big cry of horrible sounds. Unknowing where they came from.

As I just mentioned, I played mostly on TV, because it is simply a game that shines most on TV. Not that handheld was bad or anything, just that I preffered the big screen. The details are bigger, the targets appeared to be easier and it just played more smoothly. It may be my impression only, I just felt it was too compact in handheld mode.

As a game, it is a little on the hard side, but that is ok. I would assume a real zombie invasion would more or less be the same, haha. But seriously, this game is really fine, but very 18+ as are most Rebellion games. Can not wait to see what is next from them!

In conclusion, Zombie Army Trilogy is a game for the strong of heart. On the harder side of the spectrum and even possible to make a single player go through even more enemies by the click of an option. I loved it and hope you will too! As a score, it is getting an 8 as I do feel it is meant to be played mostly on TV and not handheld. The fourth game is also a little better balanced in my humble opinion.
